The colours of the State of Vorarlberg are red and white. They form the State flag which consists of two equally wide horizontal bars, the upper one red, the lower one white. The State flag with the State coat of arms in the centre serves as the official flag.
Legal basis
State constitution
Article 6, section 2: The Vorarlberg colours are red and white.
The State colours are dealt with in more detail in the Law on the State symbols, State Gazette no. 11/1996, 58/2001. Only the president of the State Parliament, the members of the State Government and the offices of the State of Vorarlberg are allowed to bear the official flag. Pursuant to
§ 248, section 2 of the Penal Code, Federal Gazette 60/1974, abuse of the Vorarlberg flag is a criminal offence.
History
The State colours correspond to the mantling of the State coat of arms granted by Kaiser Franz Josef I in 1863 and the colours of the heart shield of this coat of arms (red Montfort flag in a silver shield). Until the State colours were established in the State Constitution of 1923, the colours were borne "unofficially".
