The State of Vorarlberg on the Internet

Up to 1918 the creation and awarding of medals and similar awards in Austria was the exclusive right of the crown, of the emperor. After the foundation of the Republic of Austria the federal government assumed this function.

The Medal of Distinction of the State of Vorarlberg was introduced in 1963 and can be awarded for outstanding achievements in the service of the State of Vorarlberg.

In 1978 the Medal for Distinguished Service was created as a supplement to the Medal of Distinction of the State of Vorarlberg.

Since 1985 the Montfort Medal can be awarded for the cultivation of friendly relationships with the State of Vorarlberg which are a credit to Vorarlberg or otherwise of special significance.

Achievements in the fire brigade have been rewarded with the Fire Brigade Medal of the State of Vorarlberg since 1953.

Since 1963, putting one's life at risk to save others from hazardous situations is honoured in the State of Vorarlberg by the awarding of the Lifesaving Medal.

Outstanding sporting achievements which arouse supraregional interest have been awarded the Medal for Sporting Achievement since 1968.

Since 1968 special achievements in the promotion of supraregional sport have been rewarded with the granting of the Medal for Services to Vorarlberg Sport.

Special achievements with the local security police have been rewarded with medals since 1975.
