In 1978 the Medal for Distinguished Service was created as a supplement to the Medal of Distinction of the State of Vorarlberg. It is awarded for distinguished service to the State of Vorarlberg.
The State Government of Vorarlberg is responsible for the award.
The Medal for Distinguished Service is awarded in two classes. For distinguished services, particularly if they substantially contribute to the well-being of the State or its people, the Higher Medal for Distinguished Service is awarded, otherwise the Medal for Distinguished Service.

Description and wear
The Higher Medal for Distinguished Service of the State of Vorarlberg consists of a pectoral cross worn on the left side of the breast on a red and white triangular band. Measured diagonally, the cross is 50 mm from tip to tip and has four bars which widen slightly at the ends. It is forged in tombak and plated with real gold. It bears the state coat of arms in the centre and the inscription "For distinguished services" on the back. The triangular band is sewn together from a 45-mm moiré band.
The Medal for Distinguished Service of the State of Vorarlberg differs from the higher medal in that it is 48 mm and in bronze.
Holders of the Medal for Distinguished Service are entitled to wear it in miniature or, in the case of uniform wearers, to wear the band in the form of a narrow strip.
