Since 1963, putting one's life at risk to save others from hazardous situations is honoured in the State of Vorarlberg by the awarding of the Lifesaving Medal.
The same person can receive the Lifesaving Medal a number of times.
The State Government of Vorarlberg is responsible for awarding the medal.
Legal basis
Lifesaving law (Federal Gazette no. 46/1979, 56/1990, 57/1997, 58/2001, § 13);
Ordinance on the implementation of the law on the fire brigade medal of the State of Vorarlberg (Federal Gazette no. 61/2000).
Description and wear
The Lifesaving Medal is forged in bronze, silver-plated and patinated. It has a diameter of 40 mm. The front depicts the Vorarlberg coat of arms and the circular inscription "For lifesaving – State of Vorarlberg". The back shows stormy seas and behind this, in a mountain landscape enclosed by a bolt of lightning and the sun, a rescued person in the arms of his rescuer.
Multiple awards are indicated by a clip on the band in the same metal as the medal itself and bearing the corresponding number. The Lifesaving Medal is worn on a triangular, folded, green band on the left side of the breast.
