What is sustainable development?

"Sustainable development is a development which satisfies the requirements of the present, without taking the risk that future generations cannot satisfy their own needs."
(Brundtland Report, 1987)

Although the basic idea of sustainability dates back to the 18th Century and has developed today into various approaches, there are two fundamental elements: the fair balance of economic efficiency, social cooperation and the preservation of natural resources on the one hand, and solidarity amongst the generations – the temporal aspect – on the other.

In the meantime, sustainable development has become the mission statement for the future for both the body politic and administration. Not only the UN, which leads the way, but also the EU and all of its members are committed to sustainable strategies.
