Sustainability strategies at all level of political formulation

The national sustainability strategy was presented in 2002 based upon the European Strategy for Sustainable Development. Fields of action, goals and starting points are described in Austria’s strategy for a more sustainable future. You may find more information on the Austrian platform for sustainable development: www.nachhaltigkeit.at (link to German page)

The Federation and the States are currently working on the (further) development of a sustainability strategy for the whole of Austria. This "Austrian Strategy for Sustainable Development – a frame of action for States and the Federation" ("OeSTRAT" – Austrian NSDS) is to be seen as a further development of the Federal Sustainability Strategy of 2002, which includes the states, whereby the Federal Strategy is to remain in place. The OeSTRAT aims to provide the Federation, as well as the States, a common orientation and implementation framework and is addressed to the body politic and administration. It should name the significant goals and basic principles in an effect-oriented manner, the areas of action and options as well as appropriate mechanisms of implementation. Within the framework of OeSTRAT, shared activities are defined in working programmes together with their thematic focuses, whilst taking into account the interdependence with existing measures and activities within the individual states and at the federal level. It should enable a resource-efficient, targeted action in the central thematic areas of sustainability and allow the effective use of synergies. The programme implementation process should accompany monitoring at the national and regional level. Equally, reporting based upon key indicators is envisaged.

In addition, the development of a Vorarlberg strategy for sustainable development (VSTRAT) in cooperation with the departments of the state administration, business and representatives of civil society is currently being worked on. The goal is the composition of a generational balance sheet, as well as a sustainability report for Vorarlberg.
