The department for electrical and cable car engineering of the State Government of Vorarlberg provides expertise in a wide range of official procedures and functions as a service centre for enquiries to do with electrical engineering, cable cars, lifts, radiation protection and aviation.

The department for electrical and cable car technology has responsibility for the following areas:

• high voltage power supply
• telecommunications
• lightning protection
• corrosion protection
• radiation protection
• assessment of electrical systems in the energy sector
• passenger cable cars
• cable cars for transport of goods, agricultural materials and other materials
• lifts
• electrical supervision of lifts in state facilities
• aviation, assessment of aviation obstructions
• railways

The department of electrical engineering monitors compliance with electrical safety regulations in the installation and operation of electricity supply lines and power generation systems.

Assessments are carried out on the following:

• lines for the transmission and distribution of electrical energy
• energy generation plants (hydroelectric power stations, biogas and biomass plants, photovoltaic plants and substitute power supply plants)
• electrical plants for industry
• telecommunications (wireless communications)
• lightning protection systems and overvoltage protection systems
• corrosion protection systems in crude oil and natural gas lines
• electrical supervision of systems in state facilities
  

The department for cable car engineering is responsible for the assessment and the technical and operational monitoring of

• aerial cable cars (mainly monocable cars such as chair lifts)
• T-bar lifts with low and high cables
• material cable cars with and without works traffic (railway, industrial, forestry and agricultural)

For the district agricultural authority of Bregenz the department of cable car engineering carries out the planning and construction supervision of agricultural material cable cars. A focal point is the conversion of material cable cars for works traffic.

Technical approvals and recurrent inspections of lifts and elevators.

Information and consultation in the field of radiation protection in accordance with the law on radiation protection.
Qualified expert work in the field of radiation protection

• in approval procedures for the installation of systems for the handling of radiation sources
• in approval procedures for the operation of systems for the handling of radiation sources
• in approval procedures for the handling of radiation sources
• in the recurrent inspection of radiation-producing systems

The term "radiation sources" refers to radioactive materials, apparatus or systems which can emit ionising radiation such as open and contained radioactive materials in medical and technical applications, GSM measurement systems, level control systems, density measurement systems, dust monitors and medical and non-medical x-ray systems.

Cable cars, cables, overhead electrical lines, masts, towers are assessed as to whether they represent a hindrance to aviation.

Measures are also established as to how or whether such facilities must be marked as an obstacle.

A number of different departments share responsibility for cable cars.
