E-government is the sum of all the new options offered by State institutions to communicate by electronic means. Various forms of transactions, decision making or simple communication can be handled using Internet technology (e.g. World Wide Web, e-mail).
Among other things, citizens can - independently of place and time – make applications electronically, view files directly or contact the State institutions and their staff by e-mail.
E-government represents the following advantages for citizens:
- They no longer have to pick up application forms from government offices personally, but can download them from the directory of e-government services or from the form server.
- They can complete forms directly on the screen, where they also receive aid and support. In some cases the application can be checked while it is being entered. Information can be suggested or lists offered from which the required entry can be selected.
- Where legally permissible, verifications can be submitted by electronic means. In certain cases the citizen can download the verifications him/herself (e.g. confirmation of residence, extract from criminal records etc.).
- Communication between the citizen and the administration takes place by electronic means. Completed forms can, for example, be submitted to the administration electronically. Here again there is no need to actually go to the office.
- In further stages the electronically transferred data will be assumed automatically into the various applications within the administration. With a legally secure electronic signature it will also be possible for the citizen to directly view his/her files and acquire information about the status of proceedings.
E-government is an additional service offered by the State of Vorarlberg:
E-government shall in no way prejudice the right of citizens to make a personal visit to the office of the Vorarlberg State administration.
