Roads and paths are an essential part of the infrastructure of the mountain regions in Vorarlberg. Two thirds of the typical cultivated land of Vorarlberg lies at an altitude of over 1000 m. Around one quarter of the population lives in rural areas away from the population centres of Rheintal and Walgau.
With a total length of around 1700 km, the rural road network provides access to Vorarlberg's remotest areas. The State supports cooperatives and interest groups in the necessary development and maintenance of the rural road network. The main focus here is on improving living and working conditions as well as traffic safety in rural areas.
