Threats to the forest
- Air pollution:
Air pollution from industry, traffic and households represents a major threat to our forests. 45 % of Vorarlberg's trees are thinning at the top or can be classified as sick or dying. - Insects:
If allowed to proliferate, bark beetles as well as needle and leaf-eating insects can destroy wholes swathes of forest. - Weather:
Storms and heavy rain, prolonged periods of drought or frost can cause considerable damage to forests. - Wild animals:
The forest and the wild animals who make it their home are a natural unit and must be in equilibrium. If this equilibrium is disturbed by human influences such as tourism, an excess of hoofed game, division of habitats etc. This generally results in damage to the trees from biting and peeling of the bark. Around 50 % of the forest area requiring rejuvenation in Vorarlberg has succumbed to damage from game.
