A precondition of sustainable, natural forest management is access to the forest on roads suitable for motorised vehicles. Forest roads facilitate the rapid introduction of protective measures, for example, after a heavy blowdown (processing of damaged wood). The forest road is also a workplace, serves for the storage of wood and is a basic requirement for the recovery of timber using a skyline crane. It is important that the forest roads blend into the landscape. Without suitable access it is not possible to manage the forest efficiently or to provide the necessary protective measures.
