Biofarms
Vorarlberg has some 400 biofarms, organized in the form of individual bio-cooperatives. In 2004, these cooperatives joined forces to form the “Bio Vorarlberg“ association, as a means of constituting a joint team for the delivery of biofarming services and providing a more effective service to customers though the even closer pooling of operations.
GM-free
In the cultivation and seeding of field crops, every grower is responsible for the use of GM-free seed. In principle, the sowing of genetically-modified seed is prohibited under the terms of the Nature Conservation and Landscape Development Act [Gesetz über Naturschutz und Landschaftsentwicklung].
The State of Vorarlberg therefore requires seed suppliers who distribute seed to growers in Vorarlberg to provide a written statement to the effect that their seed is GM-free. Growers are requested to obtain seed from suppliers who are able to confirm that their seed is GM-free. By this method, it should also be possible to maintain GM-free cultivation.
