Even in the agricultural sector, there have been revolutionary changes. Farmers have long been required to share their role as food providers with numerous competitors.
In the light of the global mobility of goods and food surpluses, security of food supplies is no longer an argument which works solely in favour of mountain farmers. Both the farming industry itself, together with agricultural (support) structures, require more promotional support than has previously been the case. Nevertheless, there are grounds for optimism, given that qualities such as “freshness”, “naturalness”, “regional origin” and “well-preserved landscapes” cannot be offered by the global market, but are the exclusive preserve of our farmers.
